Winter is coming. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to take a great fall hike and take in the crisp air and beautiful autumn foliage—especially when you can get a free bonus out of it.
The West Virginia Department of Tourism has paired up with AllTrails, a hiking app, to entice outdoorsy types to get out into the wild, visit the state’s mountainous terrains, and perhaps drop by New River Gorge, the United States’ 63rd and newest national park, and they are giving out free AllTrails memberships to do it.
What is the AllTrails Pro membership?
AllTrails is a free hiking app that offers access to a worldwide database of hiking trails, including directions, information about the trails, and reviews and comments from other hikers. The app is designed to help hikers find an adequate trail for their skill level and be prepared for what they’ll encounter along the way. It’s a great way to get answers to common questions, like: Can I bring my dog? How strenuous will this hike be? Will there be shade? Should I bring my swimsuit so I can take a dip in a waterfall at the end? How’s the parking?
The Pro membership goes a step further, allowing you to download maps to your phone to access them offline, receive notifications if you take a wrong turn while on the trails (like Google maps), access satellite weather information, and check pollen, air quality, and light pollution heat maps so you know where to go (or not to go).
How to get a free AllTrails Pro membership
From now until the end of November, you can request your free pro subscription by completing an online form with your information. You will receive a code within 24 hours that will give you a one-year pro membership. By filling out the form, you are technically promising to go hiking in West Virginia at some point before Dec. 31, 2022. (You’re on the honor system, but the place looks worth the trip.) So dust off those boots and get ready to visit the mountain state with your new pro membership in hand.
