How to Improve Your Employees’ Performance Through Self-Assessment

Research has shown that when an employer allows an employee to utilize self-assessment with their job performance, this helps the employee to be more focused on their quality of work. This will also help the employee think about future growth, as well as their future with the company. It also gives the employer an opportunity to work with the employee to develop a plan for their improvement. This self-assessment model is one example that can be used by companies, schools, or by anyone who supervises and evaluates employees.

This basically is a tool that involves the employee taking a self-assessment of their job performance, and then developing goals and an action plan with timelines on how to improve their job performance. Leadership should be available to assist the employee and make recommendations, if necessary.
The process should be positive and non-threatening to the employee, and it is very important that leadership allows the employee the opportunity to develop their own goals. Leadership shouldn’t take over the process, but they can make recommendations so that the employee is working on areas of weakness.

Throughout the year, leadership should meet with the employer to address the progress or lack of progress in meeting their goals. The employer should provide support when needed, encourage the employee at all times, and remember that the self-assessment tool is used to support the employee’s professional growth. In addition, this process can be used as part of the overall evaluation of the employee.
