President Donald Trump said he would like to see ICE get even more aggressive with deporting illegal immigrants, but that its mission is being thwarted by “liberal judges” who are getting in the way.
The president shared his view on the matter during an interview with 60 Minutes on Sunday; his administration’s “Rapid Response 47” account on X shared a few preview clips of his interview, which is set to air at 7:30 p.m. ET.
“More recently, Americans have been watching videos of ICE tackling a young mother, tear gas being used in a Chicago residential Chicago neighborhood, and the smashing of car windows. Have some of these raids gone too far?” correspondent Norah O’Donnell asked the president.
“No, I think they haven’t gone far enough,” Trump said. “Because we’ve been held back by the judges, the liberal judges that were put in by [Joe] Biden and [Barack] Obama.”
O’Donnell then asked if the president was “okay” with ICE’s “tactics.”
“Yeah, because you have to get the people out,” Trump said. “You have to look at the people — many of them are murderers, many of them are people who were thrown out of their countries because they were, you know, criminal.”
Trump has sent ICE and Border Patrol agents to cities like Chicago and New York City to deport illegal immigrants. But that push has been met by resistance from Democratic leaders, including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, with Pritzker comparing Trump’s ICE raids to Nazi Germany recently.
The Trump Administration’s immigration crackdown has also run into legal challenges. A prime example is the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador whom Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has accused of being a wife-beating pedophile, among other offenses. The administration is pushing to deport Garcia but that goal has been run into repeated legal roadblocks.
Trump, in another teaser clip, said he wants to make it clear that illegal immigration is bad — but that he is also willing to work with illegal immigrants on coming back to the US.
“We have to start off with a policy, and the policy has to be: you came into the country illegally, you’re gonna go out,” Trump said. “However, you’ve also seen — you’re going to go out, we’re going to work with you, and you’re going to come back into our country legally.”
Watch via the clips above, and you can watch his full 60 Minutes interview later tonight on CBS.
