Thailand is consistently one of the countries that Australians travel to the most, and for good reason.
It’s got everything: big cities, stunning beaches, amazing wildlife, great food, interesting culture, and friendly locals. Plus, it’s a relatively short flight away, and it’s an affordable country to explore.
From the hustle and bustle of Bangkok to the sandy shores of Phuket, Thailand has plenty to offer. Here are the places you shouldn’t miss.

For city vibes: Bangkok
If you like exploring big cities, you can’t go past Bangkok. The bustling metropolis is a true culture clash, where ancient temples and ultra-modern high-rises share the skyline.
Foodies will love the endless dining options, from Michelin-rated street food to fine dining restaurants.

The metro and sky train make it super easy to get around, whether you’re heading to explore the temples by the river or the iconic party streets downtown.
Don’t miss: A longtail boat tour on the Chao Phraya River and the canals.
For affordable luxury: Koh Samui
Thailand has no shortage of islands to explore, but first-timers should put Koh Samui at the top of the list. It’s a little more laid-back than places like Phuket, and still retains an authentic Thai feel.
The island is dotted with stunning beachfront resorts and private pool villas that are more affordable than similar accommodations in other parts of the world. From the lively streets of Chaweng Beach to the more tranquil and secluded bays only accessible by boat, there’s a beach for every mood.
Don’t miss: A day trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park.
For food: Chiang Mai
Located in the north, Chiang Mai is a foodie’s paradise, offering a distinct culinary scene known as Lanna cuisine. The city is famous for its flavourful street food and a more relaxed pace of life compared to Bangkok.
You can’t visit without trying a steaming hot bowl of Khao Soi, Chiang Mai’s famous dish of egg noodle soup in a curry broth, topped with crispy fried noodles.
Don’t miss: The Sunday Night Markets.
For beaches: Koh Lipe
Often called the “Maldives of Thailand,” Koh Lipe is a small island in the Andaman Sea with stunningly clear, turquoise waters and powdery white-sand beaches. Plus, it’s a way cheaper option than the Maldives.
It’s a little trickier to get to, as it’s quite far south, but it’s a perfect destination for a laid-back vibe in paradise. I went here for my 30th birthday, and ended up extending our holiday because it was so good I didn’t want to leave.
Don’t miss: A snorkelling trip out to the reef.
For culture and history: Ayutthaya
As the former capital of the Kingdom of Siam, Ayutthaya is an incredible historical site just north of Bangkok. Its sprawling ruins and ancient temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a great place to learn more about Thailand.
It’s also a good place to get a vibe for a Thai city, but is nowhere near as busy and overwhelming as Bangkok.
Don’t miss: Wat Mahathat, famous for the iconic Buddha head entwined in the roots of a Bodhi tree.
For nature: Khao Sok National Park
This is one of the world’s oldest rainforests, with towering limestone cliffs, pristine lakes, and dense jungle. It’s an adventurer’s dream, where you can swim, hike, explore caves, kayak, and more.
Take a boat safari out on the lake, and if you’re lucky, you might even see elephants, bears, and gibbons.
Don’t miss: Staying in a floating bungalow on Cheow Lan Lake.
For a rural escape: Pai
This is a small town up in the mountainous north of the country, and is popular with backpackers and young tourists.
It’s got a laid-back vibe, with hot springs and stunning canyons nearby for day trips. There are plenty of great hikes to take on in this region, too.
Don’t miss: Watching the sunset at Pai Canyon.
