Skyscanner data shows that Brisbane has seen an increase in search popularity for travellers looking to head on a trip in January.

Though the Queensland city is a destination in its own right, Brisbane is a gateway to many other stunning beachside locations – like North Stradbroke Island, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast.

Billionaire’s paradise unveiled on private island

Travellers who want to stay in the city but also get beach vibes can take a day trip to Moreton Island.

Here, sand tobogganing, snorkelling around shipwrecks, and feeding wild dolphins are all on offer.

For breathtaking panoramic views of Brisbane, take a drive or hike up to the Mount Coot-tha lookout, then enjoy one of the area’s numerous walking trails.

The Brisbane Botanic Gardens and Roma Street Parkland are in full bloom in January, great for a stroll or picnic.

Cool off at Streets Beach in the heart of the city, or get active with a kayak or paddleboard on the Brisbane River.

While January may be the middle of summer for us, in Japan it’s the dead of winter – so it’s the perfect time to go skiing.

Another trending destination according to Skyscanner data, the ski fields around Sapporo are known for their legendary powder snow. It’s ideal for everyone from beginners to experts, and the exchange rate makes it a good place for a family holiday.

The city is also home to the annual Sapporo Snow Festival, featuring enormous ice sculptures.

After a day of skiing or snowboarding, you can then relax your aching muscles in a traditional Onsen (hot spring) and eat a steaming bowl of ramen. How good does that sound?

Da Nang, Vietnam

January falls within the dry season for much of Southeast Asia, making it a fantastic time to visit. Da Nang, a beachside city in Vietnam, should be top of your list.

Look for accommodation near My Khe Beach, with its white sand and clear water, perfect for a chilled out beach day. From there, you can take day trips to Hoi An, the Marble Mountains, and the famous Golden Bridge with one of the world’s longest cable cars.

Of course, the food is excellent, with pho and banh mi stores on every corner. 

Vietnam is known for being budget-friendly, making it a popular choice if you’re looking for an affordable overseas holiday.

Just a short flight away, January is the heart of summer in New Zealand. The weather is perfect for outdoor adventures – not too hot and not too cold.

Queenstown is the ultimate destination for anyone who loves the great outdoors. It’s surrounded by stunning national parks, hiking trails, cycling routes, wineries, majestic fjords, and a huge lake.

Yes, it will be busy in January. But the weather is so perfect that it’s worth booking in advance and battling crowds.
